Anthony Marwood

Anthony Marwood MBE, born in 1965 in London, is a renowned British violinist celebrated for his versatility as a soloist, director, and chamber musician. He studied under Emanuel Hurwitz and David Takeno at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Marwood has performed with major orchestras such as the Boston Symphony, London Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, and Sydney Symphony, working with conductors like Valery Gergiev, Sir Andrew Davis, and Thomas Søndergård. He also frequently directs and performs with chamber orchestras, including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

A champion of contemporary music, Marwood has premiered works by Thomas Adès, Steven Mackey, Sally Beamish, and Samuel Carl Adams. Adès composed his violin concerto Concentric Paths specifically for him, which he premiered in Berlin and at the BBC Proms.

Beyond solo engagements, he played in the Florestan Trio for sixteen years and co-directs the Peasmarsh Chamber Music Festival. His discography includes nearly forty recordings on the Hyperion label.

He received the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Instrumentalist Award in 2006 and was appointed MBE in 2018. He plays a 1736 Carlo Bergonzi violin.
